Chandigarh’s Power Supply Privatized: What It Means for Residents

Chandigarh power supply goes into private hands.

UT administration Chandigarh finally handed over the electricity department to EEDL which belongs to Sanjiv Goenka Group.

 

tripartite Agreement Signed

Finally agreement was signed today between the union territory administration, EEDL, and ChandigarhPowerr Distribution Limited which is called a share purchase agreement.

RPSG Group, which is a subsidiary of EEDL, has taken over the charge of the power distribution and retail supply business, as per  Approvals from the Supreme Court in December 2024 and the Punjab and Haryana High Court passed November 2024, and the. Power distribution and retail supply functions are handed over to CPDL.

 

Atamnirbhar Bharat

As per officials, this transition will upgrade the power services for over 2.35 lakh consumers in the city. This initiative is coming under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat vision, which will improve reliability, efficiency, and sustainability in the sector of power and electricity. The EEDL will invest Rs 871 crore, for this, while ensuring the protection of employee service conditions and pensions. As per commitment 24*7 power supply for the Chandigarh public in short it will increase the power supply reliability.

As per a statement from RPSG group, this acquisition of the power distribution and retail supply business of the UT Electricity Department is effective from today.

After signing the documents, assets, liabilities, power purchase contracts, and personnel from the previous entity were handed over to the CPDL as per the transfer scheme notified by the UT Administration, The main point was they took the guarantees that employee service terms remained unchanged, including the establishment of a Pension Trust for their benefit. As President of RPSG Group PR Kumar stated that the CPDL would establish an advanced consumer grievance redressal system, including a dedicated helpline and online complaint registration, to ensure prompt resolution of consumer issues.

As per CPDL, they will make a significant investment to modernize the electrical infrastructure so that Chandigarh citizens will get a 24*7 reliable power supply. They said as per guidelines from the government about the green energy initiatives CPDL is committed to increasing green energy share in its supply to fulfill the environmental goals.

Regarding tariff regulation, the president said the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) will continue to look after the determination of consumer tariffs So that tariff will be good for the citizens of Chandigarh.

He said as per the agreement employee terms of employment are fully protected, with no less favorable conditions than before the transfer. Employees will also benefit from exposure to state-of-the-art technology and through training processes.

Protesters Decision

The Powermen Union, who were protesting against this agreement after understanding the tripartite agreement have decided to take back their protest.
