Huge Announcement:
Prominent Indian footballer and the pride of the Indian footballing team, Sunil Chhetri has announced that he will be returning to represent the Blue Tigers in the upcoming international window.
Chhetri, who had already announced his retirement the previous year against Kuwait in a World Cup qualifier match, stated that it was his ‘instinct’ that led him to take such a big decision.
Return:
On Thursday, March 6th, 2025, Indian Coach Manolo Marquez announced the return of Sunil Chhetri for the March International window.
Here’s what the AIFF (All India Football Federation) had to say about Chhetri’s return:
“Sunil agreed, and that is why we have included him in the squad.”
Marquez stated that as India’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup are now over, they have now shifted their focus to qualifying in the 2027 Asian Cup.
Chhetri’s Accolades:
Born on 3rd August 1984, Sunil Chhetri is 1.70m in height and plays as a striker for the Bengaluru FC team. Being considered the Greatest Player to represent the Indian football team, Sunil Chhetri is also the 4th highest-scoring player in the world when it comes to international goals just behind Messi, Ronaldo, and Ali Daei of Iran.
He is also one of the few Indian Footballers to play in foreign leagues, representing Top-Tier Clubs like Kansas City and Sporting Lisbon in his career. With many more trophies to his name, Sunil Chhetri has already cemented his legacy and name as a legend of the Indian Footballing team.
Is This Return Good or Bad?
People have mixed opinions when it comes to Chhetri’s return to the national team. Most are really happy as they will get to witness the last dance of Sunil Chhetri in the Indian Jersey and will also get the opportunity to watch him score even more goals.
On the other side, some fans are angry as they are stating that Sunil Chhetri is way past his best days and it is an embarrassment for the Indian Team that they have to rely on a 40-year-old to score goals.
Chhetri is expected to make his return to the Indian National team playing either on 19th March in a friendly or on 25th March in a qualification round.
The statement from former FIFA President Sepp Blatter describes the entire situation of the Indian Footballing Team perfectly:
“India is a Sleeping Giant when it comes to Football”
