What’s the issue?

Google removes more than 300 apps

Google has removed these apps as they were bypassing security concerns. These apps have been downloaded, a total of 60 million times and have been stealing their users’ data for a long time. Users should pay attention when downloading such apps that appear to be more likely scams.

Why are these apps dangerous?

According to a cybersecurity research, these apps were deemed dangerous as they were likely part of a scam operation, called Vapor. Under this operation, these apps would try to steal personal data and even attack the security of your devices. It is also important to note that these apps have generated more than 200 million fake advertisement requests.

How did these apps scam users?

These hazardous apps were hidden in plain sight in the form of healthcare apps, QR-scanning apps, or even simple Wallpaper apps. The main way these apps scammed users was by running in the background without the user knowing. These apps could also change your important passwords, and get your bank details without you having a hint. As these apps ran in the background, it was not easy to detect whether they were running on your device or not.

What causes should be taken to avoid getting scammed online:

  • If you have a device that is not running the latest version of Android, update it as fast as you can
  • Avoid downloading sketchy apps from any other application market than the Google Play Store
  • On the Google Play Store, download those apps that are certified by Google.
  • Remain safe while downloading applications from places you don’t trust
  • Do not give your precious information like bank details to apps that you don’t trust
  • Enable Google Play Protect, if not enabled on your device.

Summary:

The scams on the internet seem to be increasing one way or the other, scammers always seem to find a loophole in the current system and try to steal your money. In the end, it is your responsibility to keep yourself safe while surfing the internet. If you browse the internet safely, we can assure you that you can never get scammed.
