ICC Cricket Awards: Jasprit Bumrah wins the ICC Cricketer of the Year award.

A proud and historic moment for India occurred as Jasprit Bumrah became the 5th Indian to win the Prestigious ICC Cricketer of the Year award. As the results were announced recently, Bumrah has managed to snatch the award from fellow cricketers Travis Head, and Joe Root.  

 

What is The ICC Cricketer of The Award?

 

It is an award that is handed over to the best cricketer for each calendar year. This award is also known as the Sir Andrew Garfield Sobers Trophy. Many people also regard this trophy as the Oscar of Cricket. This trophy has featured many legendary winners like Sachin Tendulkar, Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, etc and now Jaspirt Bumrah has joined this list. 

 

Bumrah Becomes the 5th Indian to win this award:

 

In the history of this award, Indian players have managed to win this award a total of 5 Times. These include Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), Virat Kohli (2017,2018). Bumrah has now become the 5th Indian and 6th award holder for India.

 

After winning the award Bumrah stated: ‘When I was a youngster, I watched many players win this award, that’s why it was my dream to win this award’

 

Bumrah’s World-Class Year:

 

Bumrah winning 2024’s ICC Cricketer of the Year is no fluke as he had nothing short of a World Class year in 2024. He played a major role in India winning the T20 World Cup as he was the Standout Performer for the World Cup managing to take a total of 15 wickets. He was also the best bowler for the Gavaskar Trophy and single-handedly dragged India to the final of the trophy against Australia where he eventually got injured, which was one of the reasons that India lost the final against Australia.

Talking about his records, Bumrah became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 wickets in Test cricket as he managed an astonishing average of sub-20 which is also the best average in history. He also managed to take a mind-blowing 71 wickets in only 13 test matches.

After winning the prestigious Sir Andrew Garfield Sobers Trophy, Jasprit is being congratulated by people all over India and the world. Many fellow cricketers congratulated him for his feat. Indian cricket fans have also congratulated Bumrah for making Team India proud. Many believe that the star pacer in spite of his injury will still play a really crucial role in this year’s Champions Trophy.
