India vs Maldives was held in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong at 10 PM. India has always held a strong record against the Maldives as both these countries have faced off against each other 21 times, out of which India has emerged victorious on 15 occasions. The most recent match between these two countries occurred way back when India had defeated Maldives with a score of 3-1 in the SAFF Championship.
Match Overview:
The match was a friendly match and featured complete domination from the Indian side as they cruised past Maldives easily with a score of 3-0. To open the scoring, Rahul Bheke scored a great header from the corner at the 34 minute to open the scoring for India.
In the second half, India again broke the Maldives defense with a great corner and an even greater header from Liston Colaco, who also scored his first goal while representing the Blue Tigers. In the 76th minute, the dream all Indian fans had been hoping for came true and Sunil Chhetri scored his long-awaited goa, thus putting a nail in the coffin for the Maldives football team, ending the match with a score of 3-0.

Yesterday’s match marked the return of Footballing legend and goalscorer for the Indian team, Sunil Chhetri. Yesterday’s match showed that he is more than capable of representing the Indian team as he seems to be in great form.
As Chhetri scored his fantastic no-look header, the stadium of Shillong erupted with an uproar as they got to witness the greatness of Sunil Chhetri. While it was unsure whether Sunil would be playing or not, he proved his worth to the team as he captained the Blue Tigers for this match and even scored a goal.
Marquez bags his first victory:
This match also featured the first victory of Indian coach, Manolo Marquez. Manolo Marquez replaced coach Igor Stimac as the AIFF believes that he would bring betterment to the Indian team and lead the Indian team to a string of good results.
What’s next for India?
This match was considered practice for both teams for the qualification of the upcoming AFC Cup as India face off against Bangladesh whereas Maldives face the Philippines in the coming days.
