Major FASTag Policy Changes Announced—What You Must Do Next

New FASTag rule: The constantly changing rules of FASTag make it difficult to remain updated with the new policies. Though the FASTag is mandatory in all the states some states are giving exemptions. Following this exemption update, Maharashtra cabinet has announced that from 1 April 2025, it will be mandatory for all automobiles to have FASTag. As a FASTag number along with the vehicle, RC will be provided and almost all banks will provide them. If you buy any 4-wheeler and above the FASTag will be mandated and provided. And the reports are saying that the rule to make it mandatory everywhere will come soon.

What is FASTag?

This FASTag which is been prominent in the last 5 years is an RFID tag that helps drivers to pay tolls directly by machine at toll collection location scanning it and withdrawing money from the driver’s FASTag account. Generally, the most suited place for the FASTag to be placed is the Windscreen of the vehicle.

It is linked to the driver’s bank account. Whenever vehicles come across the toll plaza in a line. The toll fee gets automatically deducted as it goes. The system helps the vehicle as well as toll plaza to save time as the vehicle does need not to stop at the plaza and get the billing done offline and stop at booth.

What are benefits of FASTag?

Several benefits offered by FASTag are:

  1. Ease of travelling: FASTag vehicles need not to remain in queue on toll plaza. They can use FASTag to pay online.
  2. Time saver: it save time by avoiding long lines.
  3. Low balance notifications and online payment: In corona times it was the best mode to avoid contact. and still you get notifications of low balance. if ignore, FASTag will be blacklisted. And driver wont be able to use the toll-free system.

Where to install the FASTag?

It should be implemented at a readable and scannable location. The most suitable location is windshield of the vehicle. This location allows easy scanning of tag  and no need to stand for a second even.

‘One vehicle One FASTag initiative’ by NHAI

Under this initiative it is as per reports that every vehicle will mandate one FASTag. As it becomes essential and interim part of daily travel to avoid toll payment offline and congestion at toll plazas.
