Armed militants took more than 450 train passengers hostage and injured the train driver in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province on Tuesday (March 11, 2025), officials said.

The attack took place in Bolan district as the train was travelling from the provincial capital Quetta to the northern city of Peshawar, government spokesman Shahid Rind said.

Rind said the train stopped in a deserted area after the driver was injured and said security forces were heading to Bolan to respond to the attack. He had no further information and the situation with the train and its passengers was not immediately clear.

The separatist Baloch Liberation Army, which has been waging an insurgency in Pakistan for years, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the incident

An emergency has been imposed at Sibi Hospital and ambulances and security forces have rushed to the scene, a provincial government statement said.

Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the incident, saying: “Animals who shoot at innocent passengers do not deserve any concession.”

Railway tracks in the region have been attacked before by Baloch militants using rockets or remote-controlled bombs, and the BLA has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks.”

Balochistan government orders ’emergency measures’
Pakistan’s government province has directed the local authorities to take emergency measures.

Railway controller Muhammad Kashif said the nine-coach train was carrying about 500 passengers.

As per the Controller, the train was stopped in tunnel 8 by armed men, He said. Efforts are being made to contact the staff and passengers.

An emergency has been imposed at Sibi Hospital and ambulances and security forces are rushing to the scene, a provincial government statement said.

Hostages will be killed if operation launched: Baloch Liberation Army
The militant group that claimed responsibility for the kidnapping said, “The BLA clearly warns that if the occupying forces try to launch any military operation, the consequences will be severe.

All the hundreds of hostages will be killed, and the responsibility for this bloodshed will lie entirely with the occupying forces,” as quoted by a local journalist.
