Shaktikanta Das appointed as Secretary: Former Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das has been named Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Principal Secretary. On February 22, 2025, the Cabinet’s Appointments Committee gave its approval for this appointment.
Until PM Modi issues new directives, the former RBI Governor will serve out his remaining tenure. The prime minister’s principal secretary at the moment is P K Mishra, a retired Gujarat cadre IAS officer.
Who is Shaktikanta Das?
Mr. Das, a Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer from the 1980 batch, has served in numerous prestigious responsibilities, such as Revenue Secretary and Union Economic Affairs Secretary.
Shaktikanta Das has more than 42 years of meritorious service as a professional civil servant, mostly in the fields of infrastructure, taxation, investment, and finance. The Reserve Bank of India’s 25th governor was a member of the 15th Finance Commission and additionally held the position of India’s G20 Sherpa. He headed on to become one of the longest-serving governors of India’s central bank after his predecessor, Urijit Patel, suddenly stepped down from the post in 2019.
After serving as RBI Governor for six years, managing major economic issues like the COVID pandemic and turbulence in foreign exchange reserves, he retired in December 2024 and assumed this job.
