Indian-origin minister S.Ishwaran under house arrest
Under the Prison Act, prisoners who show good conduct in prison are eligible for release after serving two-thirds of their sentence. According to an official associated with the prison service, Iswaran is suitable for this scheme as he is less likely to re-offend.
It has been decided to keep Singapore’s former Indian-origin Transport Minister S Ishwaran under house arrest. He was jailed for 12 months in October last year on corruption charges. Like all prisoners kept under the home detention scheme, S Ishwaran will also serve the remaining sentence at his residence under the prescribed conditions.
Ishwaran began his 12-month prison sentence on October 7, 2024. Under the Prison Act, prisoners who show good conduct in prison are eligible for release after serving two-thirds of their sentence.
According to an official associated with the prison service, Iswaran is suitable for this scheme because he has a low risk of reoffending. He has not committed any institutional crime in prison.
As mentioned by the judge, Ihswaran’s case is significant for trust in the public for government officials not. Ishwaran was prosecuted under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which addresses the receiving of gratification by public servants.
Justice Hoong highlighted that the higher the office held, the greater the reinforcing, culpability, the principle that public servants must uphold the highest ethical standards.
Who is Ishwaran?
S.Ishwaran is 62 years old and was serving the transport ministry in Singapur.
He held many positions in the Cabinet and contributed to many initiatives like Grand Prix Formula 1.
He pleaded guilty to 5 charges including corruption.
He was accused of taking a bribe of 74,000 Singapore dollars.
As per the judge his public service contributions were neutral and he expressed doubt about his remorse.
He is imprisoned for 1 year with a 10 % discount due to the severity of his case.
