Latest reports suggest that tech giant Meta, who are the owners of the world-famous messenger app WhatsApp are implementing a strict anti-scam policy and have banned more than 99 lakh WhatsApp accounts in India. To know more, read the article given below.
Why were these accounts banned?
The prominent messaging app WhatsApp is trying to remove all scammers and people who do fraudulent activities on their platform as various sources and reports suggest that in the span of a month (1 January- 31 January) they have banned an astonishing 99 lakh or more than 99 lakh accounts from their platform. Amid these reports, one peculiar fact is that out of these 99 lakh accounts, around 15 lakh accounts have gotten banned without even getting a single report which suggests that WhatsApp is acting on the issue of scams very actively.
Talking about the legal side of these bans, WhatsApp stated that they have banned these accounts under the Digital Media Ethics Code Laws 1(D) and Law 3A(7). The banned accounts according to WhatsApp have been banned as they have breached these codes.
These accounts have also been banned due to the breach of the Terms of Service of WhatsApp and this large-scale banning has been made possible with the help of Automated bots that help in the verification of the reports and thus ban the accounts. The detection policy of WhatsApp runs in 3 levels: At the time of registration, during the time of messaging, and during reports.
Why does WhatsApp ban accounts?
WhatsApp bans accounts for many purposes, Some of them include:
- Sending Inappropriate or Bulk messages: Sending messages through automated bots or sending mass or bulk messages can get your account banned.
- Adding users to groups without consent: Adding people to groups without their permission or consent is another reason your account can be banned.
- Violation of WhatsApp’s Terms of Service: This is the most common reason for the mass banning of WhatsApp accounts.
How to protect your account from getting banned?
If you follow the steps given below, your account cannot get banned on WhatsApp:
- Only messages to your known and only send messages to those who have sent you the message first.
- Always ask for permission before adding users to groups
- Do not send inappropriate messages to someone or in groups as it can get you reported.
- Do not forward messages to anyone that are not from a verified source and do not try to spread misinformation.
